Last Thursday, 10 September, Monday Club celebrated R U OK Day in the best way possible – lunch with new friends.
R U OK? is an Australian initiative created by Gavin Larkin in 2009. It revolves around the question “R U OK?” and encourages people to have conversations with others.
Gavin Larkin’s father, Barry Larkin, died by suicide in 1996. Later, when Gavin experienced depression and was concerned about his own mental health, he decided to act.
Tragedy sadly followed, with Gavin himself developing cancer and passing away in 2011 at the age of 42.
But R U OK Day continues.
Research has identified that social connection is important for our health and wellbeing, particularly as we get older. The benefits of socialisation include:
Mental Health
- Reduces stress: Positive social contact can help us feel calmer and less anxious.
- Lifts mood: Connecting with others can support our mood and self-esteem.
- Fills emotional needs: Talking with trusted friends gives us a sense of belonging and connection.
Brain Health
- Keeps your brain engaged: Conversation and social activities help keep the mind active.
- Supports cognitive health: Regular social interaction has been linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline as we age.
Physical Health
- Supports overall health: Strong social relationships have been associated with better health and wellbeing.
- Supports a longer, healthier life: Research from Harvard Health Publishing highlights the importance of staying socially connected as we age.
Social isolation vs loneliness
Social isolation is the objective state of having infrequent social contact and few relationships.
Loneliness is the distressing subjective feeling of lacking connection.
Both can affect our wellbeing.
