Common sense says that balance on your feet is crucial if you don’t want to fall over.
400 Australians every day go to hospital because of a fall. That is 146,000 people each year. Falls can be really bad.
I like the advice of Dr Michael Mosley in his book “Just One Thing’. He says “standing on one leg while cleaning your teeth will really improve balance.” It does. I do it now nearly every morning and night.
It is now 90 seconds each time, or 21 minutes a week without any real time put aside. Jill does the same. How good is that.
Try it. You will be really surprised how soon you will pick it up But don’t close your eyes in the first few weeks.
Dr Mosley quotes research that these are the ‘average’ results for what normal looks like:
- Aged 50-59: with eyes open 41 seconds, eyes closed 8 seconds
- Age 60-69: with eyes open 32 seconds, eyes closed 4 seconds
- Age 70-79: with eyes open, 22 seconds, eyes closed 3 seconds.
Start brushing to prevent becoming a falls statistic.
